AVSF at the 40th World Veterinary Organization Conference in Washington, DC
The Algerian Veterinary Space Foundation (AVSF) proudly announces its participation in the 40th Conference of the World Veterinary Organization, held in parallel with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Convention 2025 in Washington, D.C.
The event began with the regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the World Veterinary Association (WVA), where Dr. Anis Bouraba, Vice President of AVSF for International Relations, took part as an elected Board Member representing the Middle East and North Africa. Dr. Bouraba holds the distinction of being the youngest Board Member in WVA’s history since its founding in 1863 and the first Algerian veterinarian ever elected to the position — a milestone achievement celebrated by AVSF and the veterinary community in Algeria.
Later, the General Assembly of the World Veterinary Organization was convened, with AVSF represented by its President, Dr. Saada Bendenia, marking the first time in Algeria’s history that the country participated as a full elected member in this global forum.
The WVA Conference is internationally recognized as a premier gathering for veterinary leadership, scientific exchange, and technical collaboration. Key figures included Dr. Emmanuelle Soubeyran, Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), and the Deputy Director of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
During side meetings, AVSF contributed to discussions on:
Challenges of veterinary education in the MENA region.
Regional strategic priorities for animal health, production systems, and disease management.
Development of effective cross-border epidemic response systems under the One Health approach, now formally adopted through the recent Pandemic Agreement spearheaded by WHO, WOAH, FAO, and UNEP.
U.S.–Algerian cooperation in veterinary training, particularly learning from the AVMA’s long-standing expertise in professional regulation and its role as the leading accreditation body for veterinary education in the United States.
AVSF’s active participation in this historic conference underscores Algeria’s growing role in global veterinary leadership. Through strong international partnerships, AVSF remains committed to advancing veterinary education, strengthening disease control, and ensuring that Algerian veterinarians are empowered to meet the challenges of the future.
